At that time, they prey on ducks.   \u00a0 Other raptors such as merlins, red shouldered hawks, red tailed hawks, and others can also be seen. \u00a0 \u00a0 Peregrine falcons are a rare bird that are also seen from time to time along the river. \u00a0They nest at the power plants on Muskegon Lake. \u00a0 \u00a0 They occasionally frequent the granary area in Newaygo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/feenstraoutdoors.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/DSC03092-750x500.jpg\" alt=\"Wildlife of the Muskegon River a great blue heron with a trout as prey\" class=\"wp-image-4711\" width=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/feenstraoutdoors.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/DSC03092-750x500.jpg 750w, https:\/\/feenstraoutdoors.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/DSC03092-450x300.jpg 450w, https:\/\/feenstraoutdoors.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/DSC03092-180x120.jpg 180w, https:\/\/feenstraoutdoors.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/DSC03092-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/feenstraoutdoors.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/DSC03092.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><figcaption><em>A Great Blue Heron preys on a rainbow trout<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Bird life flourishes along the river as part of the Muskegon River&#8217;s wildlife. &nbsp; Wading birds can frequently be seen feeding on fry, minnows, and crayfish. &nbsp; During the spring and summer, the song of warblers rise above the river. &nbsp; Large mayfly hatches bring out flights of cedar waxwings which hover over the river as they feed. &nbsp; &nbsp; A lucky visitor to the river may also encounter a scarlet tanager or a indigo bunting. &nbsp; During the early fall, shorebirds commonly visit the river such as a variety of sandpipers, plovers, and yellowlegs. &nbsp; &nbsp; Turkeys are prevalent everywhere, and can be especially common when they congregate around the river during the winter months. &nbsp; During particularly cold winter months, pelagic birds which normally live on Lake Michigan will make the flowing waters of the Muskegon their temporary home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/feenstraoutdoors.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/DSC01048-750x500.jpg\" alt=\"Muskegon River Wildlife red fox kit\" class=\"wp-image-4712\" width=\"1024\" height=\"NaN\" srcset=\"https:\/\/feenstraoutdoors.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/DSC01048-750x500.jpg 750w, https:\/\/feenstraoutdoors.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/DSC01048-450x300.jpg 450w, https:\/\/feenstraoutdoors.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/DSC01048-180x120.jpg 180w, https:\/\/feenstraoutdoors.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/DSC01048-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/feenstraoutdoors.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/DSC01048.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><figcaption><em>Red fox kit basks in the warm spring sunlight<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Other types of wildlife also abound on the Muskegon River. \u00a0 \u00a0Mink are a common sight hunting and scavenging the side of the river. \u00a0 \u00a0Deer are everywhere, and bucks are a common sight during the rut in the fall months. \u00a0 \u00a0Coyotes and red fox also make a guest appearance. \u00a0 \u00a0Water dwelling animals such as beaver and muskrats are abundant.
