This fall the fish were definitely being picky. The limited number of fish and the amount of fishing pressure meant that the usual attractor flies weren’t always working. A couple things often help in this scenario. One thing that often works is to fish natural patterns with limited flash. Another trick is to downsize your flies. This fly is a spin off of one of Kevin’s great patterns, the Inside Bender. It combines subtle colors and a short slim profile. This has definitely been one of the more productive flies for me throughout the last few months.

Shank: 3/4” Shank with a loop of Braid.

Eyes: Gold Plastic Bead Chain.

Tail: Grey Olive Craft Fur.

Wing: Light Olive Barred Soft Hackle tied to lay flat over the Craft Fur.

Body: A large clump of Dark Olive Creepy Crawly Ice Dub tied in as clump and folded back so the loose ends face backwards.

Flash: A small amount of Holographic Brown Flashabou.

Head: Light Olive Ice Dub tied in as a clump.

Late last winter I realized that there was a new Ice Dub color I had been overlooking, Kingfisher Blue. It caught my eye and I threw together this fly for a guide trip the next day. After hooking a few fish the sun came out and we stopped getting bites. I remembered I had a couple of these to experiment with and it looked great in the bright sun. Within a few cast a steelhead decided it looked ok too and I was a believer. As it turns out this fly continued to produce throughout the late winter/spring. It became one of the go to flies for me, especially on sunny days. It has already been useful this year and hopefully it will continue! Over the past week larger blue flies have proven to be one of the better color choices in the high and muddy water. Hopefully as the water drops this fly will come back into play.

Hook: 2x Strong Streamer hook in size 4 or 6, or short shank for a swung fly version.

Eyes: Gold Plastic Bead Chain or you can substitute for lead eyes to get the fly down a little dealer while swinging.

Tail: Originally I used an olive partridge feather curved downward and that worked great. I recently ran out of those and have been using a light olive marabou feather with the same results.

Body: Kingfisher Blue Ice Dub dubbed onto thread lightly.

Hackle: Firey Brown hackle tied in by the tip and palmered through the body.

Flash: Holographic Yellow Flashabou, Copper also is a good choice.

Head: A clump of Kingfisher Blue Ice Dub tied in behind eyes.

I hope this fly helps you find a few fish this spring!

Thanks

I have been trying to stock up on some steelhead streamers that have proven themselves in the past. The current drought like conditions have me thinking of last fall when we had a period of very low and clear water. In that type of water I often find flies that are a little more on the natural side will produce. This is a simple Goby pattern that caught quite a few fish last fall. This fly is tied on a shank and It can be tied weighted or unweighted depending on where you are fishing. Hopefully this fly will help you catch a few more steelhead!

Hook: Your favorite stinger hook (I like Owner SSW hooks)

Shank: Any short shank will work for this fly

Tail: Black Squirrel Strip

Body: Olive Ice Dub

Underwing: Tan Grizzly Marabou

Wing: Black Flashabou, Flashabou Bronze, Copper, Green

Fins: Black Squirrel Strips

Head: Peacock Black Ice Dub

1. Tie in a loop of 40lb braid for a stinger hook.

2. Tie a strip of black pine squirrel in at the rear of the shank. The strip should be the length of the stinger loop so the the hook sticks out just past the tail.

3. Take a large clump of Olive Ice Dub and tie it in as a clump to create a large ball in the middle of the shank.

4. Cut two 1″ pieces of black squirrel strips and tie one on each side of the dubing body to create the fins.

5. Tie in a large tan grizzly marabou feather so that it covers about half of the tail.

6. Over the top of the marabou feather tie in a large amount of black flashabou the length of the tail. On top of the black flashabou tie in a small amount of flashabou weave.

7. To create a large head take a large clump of Peacock Black Ice Dub and tie it in behind the eye of the shank.

8. Add a hook to the stinger loop.

9. Tie the fly to your leader and catch a fish!
